Why not bulk anti-perspirant?
North americans buy the oddest things in bulk i.e. potato chips, candy, ketchup and all manner of things that it really doesn't matter that much if they run out of.
But who wants to run out of anti-perspirant? And there's not many thing you can be certain that you are going to continue to use for your whole life.
So only have one stick around makes no sense to me anymore.
So, rebel that I am, the other day I went out and bought 3 sticks of anti-perspirant at Shoppers Drug Mart. Cost me about $10 which is lot of money really for what I suspect is something pretty cheap to make. So Gillette, rather than spending millions on how to make fancier razors and charge an extra two bucks for refills, how about you just figure out a nice easy way for me not to ever run of anti-perspirant and pay a little less for it.

Donate to Wikipedia
Not many better examples of the enabling power of mass collaboration than Wikipedia. If these guys need money, they should get it.
Just because a lot of things are the internet are free doesn't mean that as users (dare I say, citizens) of the internet we shouldn't support worthwhile initiatives. This is a great example of one. You can afford ten bucks as easily as I can.

Google ads are gone off the home page
Ya, they're gone.
I started to have recurring thoughts about how to optimize the content for better adwords plaements and it was running counter to what I set out to do - which is talk about what I feel are appropriate and relevent business topics.
I'll leave them on archive pages but we'll see how long that lasts.

Blockbuster - the end of late fees, the beginning of something worse . . .
Yes, this is a complaint off my soapbox . . .
So, Blockbuster has made a big deal out of the end of late fees.
Great - but now we have new atrocities to replace them:
The Restocking Fee
This is what happens if you bring back your movie late, but within 30 days. It's something like $1.65. Better than a late fee but a fee that gets charged when the movie is returned late - but not a "late fee" per se.
Whatever . . .
Then there's the YJBI (you-just-bought-it) Fee
So a movie gets lost in the basement - the latest Hilary Duff flick that the kids had watched. So, weeks later the letter shows up and I owe some sum of money to Blockbuster. So I go and locate the movie and go to return it only to find that they won't accept it back. Oh sorry, that's not right. I can give them the movie, but they won't take a red cent off the balance I owe. Not surprisingly, that didn't sound that appealing.
If I'm over 30 days, a restocking fee doesn't sound do bad. So, now I'm the proud owner of Raise Your Voice and I owe about $30-odd dollars.
Oh Lord, hasten the day when I can download movies off the internet even if they are governed by all manner of digital rights management. It would have to be a much more intelligent system than this.
If you're itching to watch Raise Your Voice, don't rent it.
I'll lend mine to you.
Bring it back whenever you feel like it.
At no cost - now or later.

iPod Tax in Netherlands Amounts To Accusation & Fine
The Register is reporting a possible iPod tax could be introduced in the Netherlands.
This kind of protectionist activity really attempts to thwart forward progress and amounts to what I think of whole industries acting like sore losers over an antiquated service delivery mechanism. The evolution of business inherently results in new ideas creating new business models and old ones becoming irrelevant. This is the nature of things.
It's one thing to try and grab a piece of the piece from consumers who are stealing intellectual property, but it also impacts other completely legitimate activity unfairly.
Take for an example, an independant musician or filmmaker who creates their own content and distributes it, they need to pay a levy on:
- the media they use to save and backup their projects
- the media they use to distribute it on (if being burned to quantities to CD-R and DVD-R)
- and apparently in Germany, the hard drives that they use to create the works on
And all proceeds go to the established artists and record labels and studios who are already successful.
This is completely unfair and a very unfortunately outcome.
Rather than grow with the times these kinds of groups are content to try and extend their monopolistic control.
The good news is that, in times, all the dinosaurs will perish and truly good ideas and delivery mechanisms will succeed. New players will come on to the scene and redefine a new era of digital delivery without the encumbrances of the old scheme. It's just frustrating to watch the transition.
